According to Anyakoha and Eluwa (2010), family crisis marks a turning point, when things cease to go on as usual. Such situations occur in the family. They often affect family relationships, family goals, values and standards. An understanding of these crises can help family members adopt preventive measures, where possible or handle the crises more effectively with little strain on family relationship.  Family crisis is an upset in a steady state causing a disruption in a family’s usual way of functioning. it can also be caused by stress that develop through the occurrence of common events, such as uncontrolled birth, unemployment or because of unusual events like hurricane or a house fire. A family situation either improves or deteriorates following crisis.

A family is a group consisting of one or more parents and their children. It may also include their relatives. It is made up of group of persons united by ties of marriage, blood or adoption and characterized by common residence and economic cooperation. The family is often composed of a man, his wife and children (Anyakoha & Eluwa 2010).

According to Okeke, (2009), Home economics is concerned with strengthening and enriching family life through educating the individual for family living, improving the services and goods used by the families, discovering the changing needs of  individuals and families, satisfying different needs of the families and promoting community, national and world conditions favourable to family living. Home economics education at all level aims at improving and educating individual for family living.

According to the conference of Home economist at the Lake Placid, U.S.A (1902) in Abazu, H. U., (2010), Home economics in its most comprehensive sense is the study of the laws, conditions, principles and ideas which are concerned, on the one hand, with man’s immediate physical environment and on the other hand with his nature as a social being, and is the study especially of the relation between these two factors. In its narrowest sense, the term is the study of the practical application of empirical science as it concerns house work, crockery, sewing, laundry, house care and child care.

As presently conceptualized, Home economics has passed the era when its study was shrouded with misconceptions. The misconceptions limited Home economics to only the acquisition of skills in household arts and craft and appeared to have originated from the early domestic science centres founded between 1849 and 1930s by such noble missionaries as Mary Slessor, Sister Mary Osmond, and Mrs. A. Crowther. In those centres wives of religions leader and government officials were taught general housekeeping which included cookery, budgeting, sewing, needle craft, laundry work, and mother and child welfare in a very simplified way for the simple homes of these days and to the understanding of those women, majority of whom were semi-illiterates (Abazu, 2010).

Today, with high standards of education, advanced homes with highly sophisticated equipment, different kinds of foods and textile thrown into them by modern technology and science, Home economics has become very broad indeed. It utilizes other disciplines in its scientific applications in solving the physical, social, and economic problems of families the world over (Abazu, 2010). With the upsurge of technology seriously affecting homes, the teaching of home economics demands more serious application of principles involved in family crisis management.

The role of Home economics in family crisis management cannot be underestimated. It deals with all the aspect of family living and draws knowledge from many disciplines such as biological, physical, social sciences, arts and humanities, it unifies the knowledge drawn and uses them to teach how to manage the affairs of an individual, the family and the society at large  (Anyakoha, 2010) in order to eliminate problems that will lead to crisis in the family and catastrophe in the society.

Problems that can lead to family crisis or causes of family crisis are financial difficulties, uncontrolled child spacing, unemployment, lack of love and incompatibility among parents. Home economics helps to determine the need of individual and families for food, shelter and clothes and how to satisfy these needs.

Home economics generates knowledge from the artistic fields, such as design, dress making and cooking there by preparing individual for employment that requires knowledge, techniques and skills of creativity. Through the knowledge of Home economics, individuals, learn how to manage money and other resources to improve the goods and services used by the family. This will help to reduce or eliminate financial difficulties that leads to family crisis.

Another role that Home economics play in family crisis management is that it applies scientific principles from biology which teaches family planning and prepares youth for home making and family living. It also helps individual and families to improve their lives and provide control to inadequate child spacing which is one of the causes of crisis in the family (Okeke, 2009). These are the effective and vital role that Home economics play in family crisis management.
